180 DAYS by Kelly Gallagher, Penny Kittle. Two Teachers and the Quest

180 days two teachers and the quest to engage and empower adolescents

To buy this book at the lowest price,. If you haven't, the book is a good overview of their philosophies and beliefs as well as the writers and educational thinkers that have influenced them. With both the demands of time and the complexity of diverse students in mind, Kelly and Penny mapped out a year of engaging literacy practices aligned to their core beliefs about what matters most. In spite of my lack of commonalities with issues just described, however, I was able to glean some good ideas about daily reading and writing instruction that I hope to implement in the classroom. If I had this book last summer, my current school year would have been much smoother. Each class is unique and populated with students who have unique needs.

Amy Estersohn is an English teacher in New York. When do they collect hundreds of mentor texts? I will be revisiting this for years to come. This is by far the most helpful book I have ever found for an English teacher struggling with basic curriculum issues. And curl up in a ball and weep. This book is about making decisions about what really matters enough and how to make the most of the time we are given with our students. This book is worth every penny no pun intended! Empower all students to live literate lives. I felt that, if you boil it all down, they were advocating for conferences for reading and writing -- but they didn't spend a second on the logistics and management of this.

180 DAYS: Two Teachers and the Quest to Engage and Empower Adolescents by Kelly Gallagher, Penny Kittle (9780325081137)

180 days two teachers and the quest to engage and empower adolescents

Gallagher and Kittle have written a book based on a year of teaching in their own classrooms while located across the country from each other. I'm a huge fan of their philosophy, and I enjoyed hearing them get into the minutia of why they prioritize certain things over others namely independent reading and writing over everything else. Highest praise from a teacher: We are barreling toward summer break, facing down standardized test season and spring fever, exhausted from a year of teaching, and cautiously awaiting word of structural changes, further budget restrictions, and elevated expectations from on high; but this book has me energized to start thinking and planning for next year. I've loved the other Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher books I've read but I honestly didn't love this one. These hidden standards are worthy, but attaining them is hard — perhaps, at times, harder than Penny and Kelly realize. I would have liked for them to include more of the student examples when they talk about their work. A movement towards providing authentic education.

They did provide a map of the year and even a breakdown of a class period. I wish I could give this book more than five stars! When do they write all these models of brand new projects? Very little attention was given to reading strategies book mostly focuses on writing. Part of the book gives many practical resources, book titles, texts, planning maps, etc. Yes, they really do answer all of these questions. See for yourself the tasting in action: Success! May my children have teachers who have read and used this book.

I have so many pages earmarked for future lessons and know this is a book I'll return to often. While learning is a messy process, the end results are worth the journey. I felt that, if you boil it all down, they were advocating for conferences for reading and writing -- but they didn't spend a second on the logistics and management of this. With both the demands of time and the complexity of diverse students in mind, Kelly and Penny mapped out a year of engaging literacy practices aligned to their core beliefs about what matters most. The second half of the book focuses on teaching essential discourses in writing narrative, informational, argument, and multigenre units. However, their online supplementary examples were good, so I can't fault them for that.

My first year of high school was a huge culture shock, but a great experience. I hope that isn't true, because I know the book and its ideas are already sparking deep, thoughtful discussion in my entire learning area and our district as a whole. Let's work on one thing, and when we feel good about our progress, let's pick the next thing to work on. First Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle - how could it not be great? That said, despite the stated intention of this book, I'm still not sure how to fit it all in-- but this time it's more on my end, not in the classroom. I feel a little bit like I'm in grad school again: overwhelmed and just too darn excited. I became a little overwhelmed at the end. Typical of both Kittle and Gallagher. Map a Year of Writing: 5. We like to keep things fresh. I'm so glad Gallagher and Kittle continue to value the teacher's role in creating curriculum and giving students choice and ownership in class. I'm still uncomfortable with that idea.

I would have loved as detailed of reading sections as they did for writing the last few chapters , but that's not where their focus is. Bringing the emphasis back around to reading and writing is exactly what I've been wanting to see for years. This book is a game-changer for educators, not only as practitioners but as readers, writers, and thinkers. The decision-making in the moment is the most essential work of teaching, and it's the ongoing study of the adolescents in front of us that has the greatest impact on our thinking. The biggest thing that made it not as useful for me is: they are very heavily concentrated on writing versus reading. Hoping to build a world in which reading is respected and writing well is nurtured is just where I want to be, and this book leaves me feeling refreshed that I can be one of those mentors. I read this inspiring book over the summer along with a fabulous group of Ohio Writing Project colleagues.

Should the teacher who is faced with a group of students who seem uninterested in reading beyond answering multiple choice questions on a quiz spend more time doing read-alouds and book talks? Let us make decisions that lead to increased student engagement with reading, writing, listening, and speaking. If the answer is 4am, I'm going to settle for mediocrity and sleep in.
