Gallagher and Kittle have written a book based on a year of teaching in their own classrooms while located across the country from each other. I'm a huge fan of their philosophy, and I enjoyed hearing them get into the minutia of why they prioritize certain things over others namely independent reading and writing over everything else. Highest praise from a teacher: We are barreling toward summer break, facing down standardized test season and spring fever, exhausted from a year of teaching, and cautiously awaiting word of structural changes, further budget restrictions, and elevated expectations from on high; but this book has me energized to start thinking and planning for next year. I've loved the other Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher books I've read but I honestly didn't love this one. These hidden standards are worthy, but attaining them is hard — perhaps, at times, harder than Penny and Kelly realize. I would have liked for them to include more of the student examples when they talk about their work. A movement towards providing authentic education.
They did provide a map of the year and even a breakdown of a class period. I wish I could give this book more than five stars! When do they write all these models of brand new projects? Very little attention was given to reading strategies book mostly focuses on writing. I feel a little bit like I'm in grad school again: overwhelmed and just too darn excited. I became a little overwhelmed at the end. Typical of both Kittle and Gallagher. Map a Year of Writing: 5. We like to keep things fresh. I'm so glad Gallagher and Kittle continue to value the teacher's role in creating curriculum and giving students choice and ownership in class. I'm still uncomfortable with that idea.
I would have loved as detailed of reading sections as they did for writing the last few chapters , but that's not where their focus is. Bringing the emphasis back around to reading and writing is exactly what I've been wanting to see for years. This book is a game-changer for educators, not only as practitioners but as readers, writers, and thinkers. The decision-making in the moment is the most essential work of teaching, and it's the ongoing study of the adolescents in front of us that has the greatest impact on our thinking. The biggest thing that made it not as useful for me is: they are very heavily concentrated on writing versus reading. Hoping to build a world in which reading is respected and writing well is nurtured is just where I want to be, and this book leaves me feeling refreshed that I can be one of those mentors. I read this inspiring book over the summer along with a fabulous group of Ohio Writing Project colleagues.
